Southeast Asia is a region located in the tropic, a fact that makes it more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and thus the climate crisis. By 2030, 60% of the Southeast Asian population will live in cities and urbanizing communities, nécessitating sustainable urban planning to address the transportation challenges.
As the Southeast Asian urban population continues to grow along with the economy (increase in gross domestic product), transport systems are increasingly being motorized. Hence, the demand for cars in the region has rapidly increased.
Meanwhile, access to a reliable public transportation system emerges as a major challenge, especially for the majority of Southeast Asians in cities and urban communities.
Cities across Southeast Asia showcase truly diverse multi-modal modes of transportation, which include rickshaws, two- and three-wheelers, popular (informal) transport, buses, bus rapid transit, and mass transit.
In Southeast Asia, the transport sector is highly responsible for PM 2.5-related deaths. The region also has one of the highest rates of accidents related to road crash deaths, underscoring concerns over safety.
Given Southeast Asia’s diversity and unique context, decarbonization in the region is expected to take a different course.
While it continues to grow, the decarbonization of transport needs to be inclusive and responsive to the developmental needs of emergin Southeast Asian cities and their citizens.
Born out of a convening meeting held in Chiangmai City in August 2023 among diverse actors from different disciplines (clean air, active transport, public transport, age inclusivity, gender diversity, and clean energy), CMCSEA is the regional expansion of the Clean Mobility Collective (CMC), a growing movement of committed groups advancing sustainable transportation solutions.
Starting with 21 participating organizations from five countries (Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), CMCSEA has now grown to 24 active members, including new members from Malaysia.
CMC SEA is a platform to strengthen the collective’s main objectives through collaboration with its members.
Together, we are shaping a cleaner, greener, and more equitable future for mobility in Southeast Asia. Explore our efforts, initiatives, and how you can be a part of growing movement.
We promote zero emissions mobility solutions that are context and community-specific.
We believe that transport in cities should be safe, affordable, reliable, covienient, and accessible to everyone.
We advocate for low emissions mobility that supports everyone in living their best and healthiest lives.
We all work forward a healthy transport system that is socially and environmentally just.
Clean Mobility Collective Southeast Asia (CMCSEA) has identified key themes to promote inclusive urban mobility in the Southeast Asian region through Movement, Awareness, and Skillshare. These areas focus on creating inclusive, sustainable, low-carbon transportation systems across Southeast Asian cities and urbanizing communities
